Our culture wants us to parent from a posture of anxiety, FOMO, and burn out. I didn’t want to mother that way. I started bringing fun and empowerment into my parenting by recreating the summer camp I worked at in my early twenties into our daily lives, year-round. I share the ways we adapt the spirit and mindset of camp into the rhythms and requirements of our daily lives. I demonstrate how everything we do can be a pathway to learning with intentionality and the right mindset. But more than that, I offer a vision for parenting a different way, whether you embrace the camp life or not. I chose camp as inspiration because my reflections on my experiences at camp aligned with my values as a mama and home educator: play, outdoors, self-directed learning, and community. Leaning on my time at camp, which epitomized these values, gave me a framework for curating our homeschool and instilled in me a fresh confidence for the homeschool journey.
I hope you find inspiration here. What I really hope I inspire is for you to find your own version of camp to recreate – some experience and assets, your gifts, which you already possess and can adapt into your own homeschooling. And maybe to reclaim some childhood – yes for your kids – but also for the child in you.
About Me
Hi! I’m Kat.
I’m a former college program specialist & lecturer/learning scholar, nonprofit fundraiser, and summer camp counselor turned stay-at-home + homeschooling mama of one. I’m taking on educating my son and turning to my experience at a summer day camp as the bedrock to inform my approach. It’s not about replication but instead about inspiration and adaptation. No matter what inspiration I find outside myself, I’ll always come back to this question: how can I bring some of camp into our homeschool life?
This space is about my journey to mother and home educate my son. To me, that looks like being present in his childhood, honoring both my son’s and my own wholeness, rejoicing in my role as mom and wife, nurturing his personhood, and learning alongside him. With lots of adventures and community and fun along the way. All the things camp was always all about!
As a homeschooler, I lean Charlotte Mason in my philosophy. I’m a Wild + Free Mama and the Leader of the Gordon County, GA Group. I’m also co-host of the Homeschooling Down South Podcast. I teach read aloud book club and nature study for a local homeschool enrichment program. You can find me loving this life I get to live on Instagram @recreatingcamp, Facebook at Recreating Camp, and on Pinterest at RecreatingCamp.
I’m a child of God, so loving my neighbor is my greatest ambition. My perspective is informed by my faith and I don’t filter my faith out of my stories or resources. My family and I live in northwest Georgia, though I’m originally from the Redwood Forest in northern California. I’m passionate about nurturing the atmosphere of my home, adventuring with my family, increasing local access to nature – especially for kids and families, encouraging homeschool families, and introducing people to beautiful words. I love to go hiking, camping, kayaking, and road-tripping. I’m never happier than when I’m gathered with others, eating barbecue or tacos (or barbecue tacos!), around a picnic table or campfire.
